President Obama Blog > Barack Obama > Obama Louverture Find Out Why Woodring Calls The First Black President Barack Barack Hussein Obama Louverture Barack Hussein Obama Louverture (born August 4, 1961), also Barack Obama, or just Obama, is a the first Black president of the United States of America.
I've decided to add Louverture to the name Barack Obama because I was looking for the perfect name to give to my new Barack Obama blog as a Haitian man living in the United States for more than half of my life and I could not think of a more appropriate name for President Obama then "Louverture", named after Toussaint Louverture, the founding father of Haiti and the inventor Black freedom on planet earth.
So I decided to call it www.ObamaLouverture.com
Honestly, I am proud of the guy, he inspires me in every possible way, and he has opened the biggest door black people has ever seen.
"In America, you can be whatever you want to be... YES YOU CAN even become President of the United States of America."
I believe with all my heard that this day cane in America because of a young leader who stood up for in a tiny island south of Florida and said YES WE CAN be free.
- This tiny island is Hispaniola,
- The country is The Republic Of Haiti,
- The young leader was François-Dominique Toussaint Louverture
First us compare the names Barack Obama and that of Toussaint Louverture.
Barack means 'blessing' in Kiswahili or 'a blessing from God', Barack or Barak means 'lightning' in Hebrew.
In Haitian Creole, a 'Barak' is a rough neck, the noone wants to mess with a 'Barak'. When a Haitian man say 'ou se yon Barak' it literally means that you are a very brave man and noone will every mess with you.
Toussaint, translated from French, means 'the awakening of all saints' or 'all souls rising'.
To understand the name Obama, I have to tell you a little bit about an old African tradition of the Luo Ethnic group in the southwestern part of Kenya, this is where Barack got his last name 'Obama' from.
In the Luo culture, most traditional names were given by the baby's mother in reference to something relating to the birth of the child.
It is believed that when Obama's great-grandfather was born, one of his arms or leg was slightly bent. The word meaning 'crooked' or 'slightly bent' in the language of the Luo people is 'bam' and the prefix 'O' means 'he'. Can you begin to understand where 'Obama' comes from.
Unfortunately for Toussaint Louverture, he was born in Captivity, and the history of his last name 'Breda' is completely different. In the colony of Saint Domingue, modern day Haiti, when a Black man is born in captivity, his last name is more of a label or a breed, the name of the plantation where you were born is your last name.
In the case of Toussaint, he earned the name 'Toussaint Breda' because he was born in the 'Breda Plantation' of Habitation Breda.
Toussaint Louverture was nicknamed the First of the Blacks He had many first
- Toussaint Louverture is the first black leader in the new world
- Toussaint Louverture is the first to Abolish slavery in the new world
- Toussaint Louverture is the first black to secure control over a colony
- Toussaint Louverture is the first black to invade a country in order to free their slaves
- Toussaint Louverture is the first black who defeated armies of three imperial powers: Spain, France, and Great Britain.
Barack Obama has had many firsts:
- Barack Obama was the first Black president of the Harvard Law Review.
- Barack Obama is the first Black Democratic Presidential Nominee
- Barack Obama is the first Black to be elected President of the United States
- Barack Obama is the first major-party presidential candidate to turn down public financing in the general election since the system was created in 1976.
To compare Barack Obama to Toussaint Louverture is almost insane because, in more than two centuries, the Haitian leader has only been compared to his foe Napoleon Bonaparte. He is often nicked named 'the Black Napoleon'.
The highest honor in Haiti is the award of 'Chevalier' in the Haitian Legion of Honor, being that Barack Obama has not done anything yet for the Haitian people he is really not worthy of any Haitian honor but as a Black man becoming president of a country who did not recognize Haitian as a republic until 57 years after her independence, we should agree that He did open a door that all Haitians should be proud of.
This why I decided to call my Barack Obama Blog www.ObamaLouverture.com, a name I believe is well suited for him.
Congratulations and God Speed, President Barack Hussein Obama Louverture.
I am Woodring Saint Preux and I said it.
